Serving Ashland City

Tree removal in Ashland City, TN, priced from the gate width and the carry to the truck, with the brush, rounds and grindings hauled off the property.

Hendersonville TN Tree Removal has spent more than twenty years taking trees down across Middle Tennessee, and tree removal in Ashland City is priced here on the carry rather than the cut. Dropping a tree takes an hour. Moving what fell from the back of a lot to a truck parked on the street is what fills the rest of the day, and it is what fills most of the invoice.

So we measure the access before we price the tree. Gate width, the width of the side yard, the grade behind the house and the distance from the trunk to the nearest spot a chipper can actually sit all get written down first, because those numbers decide which machines reach the work and how much of the job gets done by hand.

What comes back is one written quote covering the whole job: the takedown, the brush, the trunk rounds, the stump and the grindings the grinder leaves behind. Nothing we cut is going to be collected by anyone else here, so disposal cannot be an afterthought stapled to the estimate later.

Measure the gate before you price the tree

Worker rolling a chestnut oak round out through a narrow Ashland City side gate to the street, because the chipper cannot follow it in.

The first number on an Ashland City estimate is a width in inches, and it is usually the gate. Fixed-width machines either fit or they do not, and there is no version of this job where a machine three inches too wide gets in anyway.

The width ladder, in inches

A Rayco RG13 Series II stump grinder measures 25 inches. A Vermeer SC30TX is 35 inches. A mini skid steer runs 36 inches on 7-inch tracks or 42 inches on 9-inch tracks, and a Vermeer SC70TX opens to 51 inches extended.

Those four widths are the whole ladder, and a homeowner can read their own gate against it with a tape measure in about a minute. A 30-inch opening means the narrow-access grinder and nothing else; a 44-inch opening changes the price outright, because a mini skid steer can carry what a crew would otherwise drag.

The chipper never goes through the gate

A Bandit Intimidator 19XPC whole-tree chipper is 7 feet 9 inches wide and weighs 10,500 pounds. It does not pass a residential gate, it is not crossing a lawn to reach the tree, and it stays where the truck stays.

Everything cut therefore travels to the machine instead of the machine traveling to the wood. That carry, across the lawn and out through the gate, is the largest labor line on most removals here, and it is why two identical oaks on two lots a few hundred feet apart do not cost the same.

A compact footprint, mostly fenced

Ashland City has 2,299 housing units, of which 48.8 percent are single-family detached and 15.0 percent one-unit attached (ACS 2024 5-year, table B25024, a labeled units-in-structure proxy). Owner-occupancy runs 61.9 percent, and 931 owner-occupied one-unit detached homes are published directly (B25003, B25032).

That is a great many detached houses on a small municipal footprint, which in practice means fenced back yards, tight side yards and neighbors close enough that property protection mats and a controlled lowering device matter more than raw horsepower.

Valley floor in front, steep ground rising behind

The town sits at roughly 430 feet on the northeast bank of the Cumberland River near the Harpeth confluence, with the relief above it rather than beneath it. Local relief on this part of the Western Highland Rim runs 300 to 500 feet, so a property can be flat at the driveway and climbing hard eighty yards behind the house.

Slope picks the method before the tree does

Cheatham County’s most extensive soil unit is the Hawthorne-Sulphura association, roughly 67,000 acres on 20 to 60 percent slopes, somewhat excessively drained. A dominant map unit at that grade is a statement about access rather than about fertility: a good deal of the ground behind this town cannot be reached by a bucket truck at all.

On that slope a crane frequently cannot be set, because there is nowhere level and load-bearing to put outriggers within reach of the canopy. The ordinary hillside removal is a climber working with a rigging block and a lowering device, piece size chosen against green log weight and against how far every piece has to travel once it is down.

Chert is a wear problem, not a refusal

The Hawthorne series formed in residuum of interbedded siltstone and cherty limestone, with depth to soft bedrock of 20 to 40 inches, hard bedrock below 40, and slopes ranging from 5 to 70 percent. A grinder cutting 12 to 16 inches below grade stays inside soil on that unit.

What it is cutting through is chert, and chert wears teeth. That is a consumables and time question rather than a reason to stop, which is why we quote stump grinding by diameter and by depth below grade, with the grindings and the backfill settled in the estimate instead of argued about afterward.

Fragipan, not rock: how a tree here comes over

Trees on the ridges above town commonly stand on Dickson soil, and what stops their roots is a dense pan rather than stone. The Dickson series puts depth to the fragipan at 18 to 36 inches while bedrock sits more than five feet down, and the pan itself is slowly to very slowly permeable.

A shallow plate over a dense layer

Roots do not readily cross that pan, so the tree builds a wide, shallow, plate-like root system above it. After heavy rain, water perches on the dense layer, the plate loses its purchase in saturated soil, and the tree goes over without rock ever entering the story.

These soils are also cherty, acid and low in fertility, which means slow recovery from root damage. That is an argument for keeping trenching, excavation and equipment traffic outside the dripline of any tree you intend to keep, rather than a claim about one particular species.

What the storm record does to that plate

Middle Tennessee averages 18 tornadoes a year over 1995 to 2025, against 8 in West Tennessee and 6 in East. The June 21, 2019 derecho crossed every Middle Tennessee county with more than 100,000 outages, and the all-time measured gust at Nashville International is 96 mph, set April 1, 1974.

Ice does something different to a tree. The January 25 to 26, 2026 storm laid down 0.50 inch or more of accretion, with a statewide peak near 230,000 customers out and 444 broken poles; ice fails limbs by weight, so what it leaves is crown failure over roofs rather than a failed root plate.

Lines, and the call that comes first

The electric right of way here belongs to Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation, which maintains a 20-foot clearance on both sides of its lines and tells members not to prune inside that right of way themselves. Work touching a secondary service line needs a CEMC service order before anyone leaves the ground, and that is a scheduling dependency we raise at the quote rather than discover on the morning.

On storm calls the utility is contacted before a saw comes out. We prune to ANSI A300 standards and stop for weather the way ANSI Z133 requires, and we will put a written hazard assessment in front of a neighbor, an HOA or an insurance adjuster, naming what we saw: conk at the root flare, co-dominant stems with included bark, diameter at breast height.

Where the brush goes when the county accepts none of it

Cheatham County’s own solid waste page states that the Sam’s Creek Road facility does not accept brush or yard waste, and directs it instead to the Compost Company at 3643 Hwy 12 North in Ashland City. The transfer station’s bulk tipping fee is $75 per ton, or $3.75 per 100 pounds, effective July 1, 2026.

That one line reorganizes the job. Every limb, every round and every barrow of debris leaves the property by truck, on our fuel and our clock, to a destination the county does not run, so we quote the haul as its own line instead of burying it inside a takedown price.

Burning is not the disposal path for a removal

Inside the city limits a burn permit is required year round through the city, and only natural vegetation may be burned; household trash is not permitted. Outside the town, the Division of Forestry permit season runs October 15 through May 15 for fires within 500 feet of forest, grassland or woodland.

The online state permit route covers an individual leaf or brush pile of approximately 8 feet by 8 feet or smaller. One mature tree exceeds that many times over, which is why chipping and haul-off, rather than a burn pile, is the realistic answer once a whole tree is on the ground.

Leaving the wood cuts both ways

Homeowners often ask to keep the wood, and the honest answer turns on the carry rather than on the species. Where the truck can park near the stump, cutting the trunk into rounds and stacking them where they fall takes real money off the quote, because it removes the drag and the disposal at the same time.

Where the tree is up the slope or behind a gate, stacking saves less than it looks like it should. The rounds still have to come off the work area, and moving them by hand can cost about what moving them to the chipper would have, so we price both versions and tell you which one is which.

Who signs off on the work

Tennessee issues no tree-care or arborist license of any kind, and the state contractor license threshold begins at $25,000 in total materials and labor. The separate Home Improvement license, covering $3,000 to $24,999, applies only in a named list of counties that does not include Cheatham, so a mid-sized residential job here carries no license requirement of its own.

What is worth asking for instead is current insurance, the ISA Certified Arborist credential and a Tree Risk Assessment Qualification behind any written hazard opinion. The one town provision that reaches a private yard is the municipal code’s nuisance section, which names the growth of trees among the conditions that can be declared a nuisance, allows ten days to remedy after notice by registered or certified mail, and makes the cleanup cost a lien collected the way property taxes are collected.
